About Us / Adkins Family Farm History: The Adkins Family Farm is a small farm which offers pasture-raised, free-range poultry, beef, some vegetables and teaches classes on grow box construction, raising red worms and chickens. Our philosophy of health eating is based on the bible's instructions. It is amazing, awesome and humbling to us to find that modern scientific nutritional thought is so consistent with what the biblical authors instructed us to eat thousands of years ago. Our thinking has also been influenced and enriched by the Weston A. Price Foundation, the "slow food" movement, and the need to preserve endangered farm animals. In terms of poultry, we raise heritage turkeys and chickens. In terms of cattle, we have a jersey heifer and a variety of goats. We believe that it is essential for our cattle and poultry to roam freely on grassy pastures. To see and hear their joyous screams and moos as they run across the property makes one well aware that God designed all animals to be free. We believe caging them is unthinkable but also unhealthy since small quarters promote disease. Product sales are by pre-arranged appointments only since we are a small family farm. Our goal is not to be a large, commercial farm that "pays all the bills". Instead, we simply raise the best quality food that we can for our own small family and sell the excess. Our gardening, worm and chicken classes are held during May & June, September & October and January & February. Course fees are $25 per family. Registration is required so that we can purchase materials. In the gardening class, we compare raised bed gardens that use the square foot, lasagna gardening and grow box methods. Students will learn how and why grow boxes are the most productive method of gardening and will learn how to make their own using easily available materials. Students also make a grow box that they can take home. In the worm class, we teach students how and why to raise red worms and they take home a worm house and a cup of worms. In the chicken class and kids' chicken camp, students learn the nature of the various chicken breeds and how to raise chickens.
