About Us / Alfred's Farm History: Alfred's Farm produces Animal Welfare Approved eggs. \n\nAlfred Loeblich raises Animal Welfare Approved laying hens in the foothills of North Carolina. Alfred’s breed of choice is the Salmon Favereolle – he is in the process of expanding his flock and now has 54 birds, including one extremely docile rooster. Alfred chose this breed because of their gentle nature, good mothering abilities, cold tolerance and winter productivity. He adds, “They are also unusual because they have five toes and feathers on their feet. The breed is endangered, and I wanted to be a part of maintaining it. They lay beautiful brown, eggs with exceptional flavor.” \nLoeblich, a botany professor by training, moved to North Carolina in 2008 after teaching at both Harvard University and the University of Texas at Houston. On his decision to become Animal Welfare Approved, Alfred says he was introduced by another farmer in the area who appreciated the benefits of AWA certification: “I looked into the program and I thought it was a worthwhile thing to do.”\n\nAnimal Welfare Approved eggs from Alfred’s Farm are available at area farmers markets and direct from the farm by appointment.
