About Us / Almost Heaven Farm History: All of our birds are raised on grass in floor-less movable pens, which we move daily so the birds can have a fresh selection of the poly-culture that grows in our pastures. This provides the only fertilizer we use (except lime) and ensures that the manure does not become a toxic hazard polluting our creek, well, springs or ground water. The chickens dine on locally mixed feed composed of air-cracked corn, soybean meal, alfalfa, oats, oyster shell and an organic probiotic based vitamin and mineral supplement. No industrial waste here (ie. animal byproducts, vegetable byproducts or biologically unavailable mineral supplements). We never use medicated feed (antibiotic or coccidiostat laced) and actually have very little need of it as our birds are kept quite healthy by living a pretty normal chicken-lifestyle in the fresh air and sunshine with bugs and fresh greens to eat everyday. As you can likely tell raising poultry this way is labor-intensive and requires a level of attention and care that factory farms could not possibly provide. But, we are not trying to produce the cheapest chicken. We are trying to produce the best-tasting healthiest chicken that is available and do it in a way that is long term sustainable for the land, the people that work it and the consumer.
