About Us / Baldwin Family Farms History: Beef at Baldwin Family Farms is Animal Welfare Approved.\n\nThe Baldwins have been farming for nearly forty years in the piedmont region of North Carolina. They purchased their first Charolais heifers in 1969, and have been building their herd – and their genetics – ever since. The Baldwins originally started as breeders, but “quite by accident” got into raising grassfed beef when they decided to market surplus stock themselves. The feedback was so good they decided to start a business selling grassfed beef. They have honed their skills both as breeders and beef producers, and now supply area grocery stores, restaurants, farmers markets and online shopping. As a veteran farmer, V. Mac has this to say to beginners:\n\n Go to school, rent a farm, then do it-but keep your day job. If you farm long enough and well enough, you can’t afford to keep your day job any more.\n\nThe Baldwins decided to certify their farm “Animal Welfare Approved” because they noticed a growing interest in farm animal welfare among their customers. “You will not believe how many emails and phone calls we get regarding how the animals are treated,” says V. Mac. The Animal Welfare Approved seal is an assurance to consumers that the Baldwin’s cattle have been treated according to the highest welfare standards. In addition to becoming Animal Welfare Approved, V. Mac was selected as the 2008 North Carolina winner of the Swisher Sweets/Sunbelt Expo Southeastern Farmer of the Year Award. He has also been appointed President of the North Carolina Forage and Grassland Council, an association with more than 500 members across the state. The Baldwins are a welcome addition to the Animal Welfare Approved program and a model for other farmers across the nation.
