About Us / Blackland Farm & Cattle History: Todd and Katherine Ehlers began farming December 2015 with a vision to produce nutrient-dense food through pasture-based farming practices. We believe healthy food comes from healthy soil. We focus primarily on the health of our land to ensure the highest quality food possible.
We are second career farmers and use alternative techniques on our farm. We are family oriented and want to ensure we provide the best food for our family and yours. We are community focused. Strong community is rooted in quality schools, good churches, and strong, local enterprise. We produce food in our community for our community.
Our two children thrive on our farm and assist in our daily work. Our days include activities such as moving cows to new pastures, picking dewberries, mixing feed, repairing fences, and dining table meetings. We live on our farm to stay in tune with its needs.
Our farm is pasture-based. This means our primary goal is to restore healthy soil to produce high quality forage for our livestock. Farm animals thrive when allowed to live where intended: on green grass in fresh air and sunshine. We farm with sustainable methods that avoid unnecessary chemicals. Just as you would expect, our farm animals are treated with the upmost respect and care.
We use compost instead of synthetic fertilizer. We use holistic management to prevent problems associated with insects or weeds as opposed to conventional, chemical practices. We never feed grain to our cattle and we protect our water sources from livestock contamination.
