About Us / Butter Bakery Cafe History: After 20 years as a middle school English teacher, I decided to shift careers and I bought a local coffee shop / bakery with the goal of providing a different kind "classroom space" dedicated to building community around great local food. We bake and cook onsite from scratch in small batches to provide fresh daily offerings that flow with the seasons. After 7 years in a small cramped, makeshift storefront, we moved to a newly constructed restaurant space that fits our needs, highlights our goals, and provides a warm cheery setting for our neighbors. In our new space we have partnered with Beacon Interfaith Housing Collaborative to provide a supportive worksite for the young adults in their supportive housing program.
We have goals for zero waste (composting or recycling nearly all of our waste), support for local businesses (with over 60 local connections) and providing the best scones in the city. We participate actively in our neighborhood and are moving to create our own gardening spaces on our site to help support a growing urban agriculture movement here in Minneapolis. We host four Community Supported Agriculture farms and are the neighborhood meeting place and community hub.
While we continue to face the challenges of just "making it" day to day, we have weathered our five block move, a 6 month road construction detour, and some pretty harsh winters to be pretty grateful for all the support from our community that got us this far. And we are excited to be part of a resurgence of vitality along Nicollet Avenue, Minneapolis' main street.
