About Us / Faulkner Bent Farm History: Raises Animal Welfare Approved beef cattle.\n\nKristin Smith, Vernon Faulkner, Melissa Bond and David Powell raise Animal Welfare Approved beef cattle at Faulkner Bent Farm, a family operation which has raised cattle on the same land since the early 1900's. Smith is the 6th generation to take care of the family farm. She is not the only descendent – the farm’s Black Angus cattle are from the original lines as well. \nSmith grew up helping her grandfather on the farm during hay season, but moved to the San Francisco Bay area after grad school. It wasn't until her grandfather was diagnosed with cancer that she moved back home to begin managing the farm.\nSmith says, “I am proud to carry on my heritage on Faulkner Bent. As I walk through the fields, I am proud that I carry on our family heritage with my cattle grazing by my side. It's the same river, hills and pastures my ancestors walked and prayed over. We are also proud that we are continuing the same sustainable practices that they applied for the health of the land and animals.” On why she decided to pursue Animal Welfare Approved certification, Smith explains, “We were looking for a standard that was reliable and truthful to allow us to stand next to and give us support. AWA has been that structure and voice we needed.”\nBeef from Faulkner Bent Farm is available at area restaurants and farmers markets; visit Animal Welfare Approved’s online directory for details at: http://www.animalwelfareapproved.org/product-search/.
