About Us / Fowler Creek Farm History: Produces Animal Welfare Approved chicken eggs.\n\nNick Rupiper and his partners Ross Cannard and DeeAnn Freitas raise Animal Welfare Approved laying hens at Fowler Creek Farm in Sonoma, CA. Fowler Creek raises mostly Australorps, Buff Orpingtons, Cuckoo Marans and Americanas, all breeds producing a variety of beautifully colored eggs. Nick says the different egg colors are a hit with their customers and they make sure they put a variety of egg colors in each carton. Often times the colorful eggs may be on display at such restaurants as Chez Panisse in Berkeley and Boulette's Larder in San Francisco.\n\nWhen asked how most farmers got their start there is usually a link to childhood or history of farming in the family, but Nick’s entry into the farming world was much more spontaneous. In fact, Nick hadn’t even considered getting chickens until the morning he actually went out and purchased four chickens. Two days later he got eight more chickens. Soon he found himself with 150 chickens and now Fowler Creek is on its way to having nearly 1,000 laying hens!\n\nWhile Nick’s beginnings in the chicken world may sound a little out of the ordinary, he credits his start as a “backyard chicken guy” or “chicken enthusiast” with giving him a closer connection to his chickens. He looks at how his farm operates from the chickens’ perspective in order to make sure they’re the happiest they can be. Nick, Ross and DeeAnn designed the farm with the intention of giving the chickens the ability to roam in a variety of environments – woodlands, orchards and fields. Nick says, “The bottom line isn’t about money, it’s about making the chickens the happiest.”\n\nOn his reasons for applying for AWA certification, Nick said, “They’re doing what I want to do. And these people are chicken obsessed too. Those are strict standards…They give my enthusiasm for chickens some validity. Nick went on to say, “It seemed like no one else was helping out the smaller farmer. That’s why I was really attracted to AWA… I wanted to be part of a bigger scheme and spread the word.”\n\nNick Rupiper is not only a chicken enthusiast/farmer. He is also a drummer in “The Farm Band.” There was a time when his chickens conflicted with band practice. Nick would say, “I can’t go to band practice because I have to put the chickens away!” Luckily, Nick was able to convince his band mates that they couldn’t very well call themselves “The Farm Band” if they weren’t going to accommodate his chicken schedule. Now band practice is scheduled around the chickens’ needs.\n\nTo see Nick drum, visit www.Thestrongsauce.com, to see him farm, visit http://fowlercreekfarm.com/, and to see him blog visit http://nixchix.wordpress.com/.
