About Us / Free Bird Farm History: Ken Fruehstorfer and Maryellen Driscoll have owned and operated Free Bird Farm, LLC since 1999.The 134-acre farm is located in Palatine Bridge, a small town in New York’s Mohawk Valley where tractors and Amish buggies are as much a part of the local traffic flow as motor vehicles. Ken started farming immediately after graduating from college, where he majored in political science but developed a strong interest in sustainable agriculture. He spent almost a decade working on a variety of small-scale, diversified farms in New England and the Southwest before starting his own farm in New York. In addition to co-managing the farm with her husband, Maryellen works as a professional food writer. She has worked as an editor for Cook’s Illustrated magazine and is a Contributing Editor for Fine Cooking magazine. She especially enjoys writing for CSA members about the food they grow—how to cook it, prep it, store it, etc.—for the CSA's newsletters. Ken and Maryellen have two children, ages 7 and 4, who enjoy digging for worms, collecting eggs, and chasing chickens.
