About Us / Furnace Brook Winery at Hilltop Orchards History: Hilltop Orchards is a historic apple orchard on 200 bucolic acres in the beautiful Berkshire region of western Massachusetts. Hilltop Orchards is also home to the region's first farm winery. Hilltop Orchards follows an ecological approach to growing that even organic growers use, employing the use of complementary methods such as weather forecasting and natural pest predators. The result is a delicious tasting, residue-free eco-friendly apple. The best news for residents and visitors to the Berkshires is that buying local also helps our environment by reducing the carbon footprint, maintaining open spaces and perpetuating the tradition of local farms.Over 26 varieties of apples are grown at Hilltop and the owners are preserving and perpetuating many varieties of rare heritage-antique apples such as Golden Russets and Rhode Island Greenings. Some varieties are used in their winemaking.John Vittori, the owner, started with hard apple cider as a hobby, and then studied in England with cider-masters. Johnny Mash was introduced in 1994 and two years later was rated the Number One Hard Cider by Yankee Brew Review. In 1997 the Vittori's built a 6,000 square foot facility to house a new cider-mill and necessary equipment to pasteurize and ferment all their products on site. Then in 1998 they started Furnace Brook Winery and now have 14 varietals.
