About Us / Hartwood Farm History: Hartwood Farm lies in the hills of Fenner, NY (between Chittenango and Cazenovia). We provide the greater Syracuse and Madison county region with produce through local farmers markets and a community supported agriculture (or CSA) program.
We began farming 15 years ago in NH and moved out to CNY because of the good soils, beautiful land, and great people.
Our harvest season begins in late May and runs to December. (Our CSA season runs from mid-June to mid-October!) Our crops include pretty much every vegetable that grows in the CNY region.
We grow vegetables on 4 acres and use only methods approved for organic production for the crops. We use the rest of our land for hay and mulch crops and to pasture our hens. Hartwood Farm follows all rules and practices approved for organic certification, and is a Northeast Organic Farming Association of New York Farmers’ Pledge operation.
We use a range of practices designed to conserve and build soil and biodiversity, while raising delicious and healthy crops. These include using cover crops to protect soil from erosion and leaching, rotating crops to naturally reduce disease and pests, irrigating with drip systems to minimize water use, and only using natural, organically approved sprays.
We grow a mix of heirloom and hybrid produce, strive to buy our farming inputs and supplies locally, and manage our land with the goal of long term productivity in mind.
