About Us / Hen House Market History: In 1923, Sidney and Mollie Ball started a small neighborhood grocery store on the corner of 16th and Stewart streets in Kansas City, KS. Eighty years later, that humble beginning has evolved into a company with 14 locations that employs over 4,000 people.\n\nBesides carrying a selection of conventional groceries, Hen House Market actively supports the Buy Fresh/Buy Local campaign, which focuses on bringing the best of products grown and produced by local family farms in and around the Kansas City Metropolitan Area. In addition to naturally raised meats and dairy products, the Buy Fresh/Buy Local campaign also features free-range eggs, local honey, freshly baked breads and jams made from native, wild fruit. All Buy Fresh/Buy Local items are clearly marked to distinguish them from the conventional items. \n\nThis focus is important to the partnership and the customers of Hen House Market for the following reasons: \n\nFresher foods - grown close to Kansas City and therefore have spent far less time in a warehouse or being transported across the globe\n\nTastes Better - grown under the watchful eye of local family farmers whose livelihood depends upon the product and its quality. The food has superior taste and in many cases superior nutritional value \n\nSupports the Local Community - because these farmers and producers live in our local community their economic success benefits our area economy and stabilizes the erosion of small family farms by large corporations. Their money stays in our community and helps it prosper. \n\nGrown in the United States - each of these products are good old fashioned food grown in the United States of America.\n\nItems vary with the seasons, but an updated list of items can always be found on Hen House's website. Store hours are 6 a.m. to 11 p.m.
