About Us / Huntoon Farm History: Our farm is a five generation farm established in 1856 by my great grandfather Harvey Huntoon. From a young child, there was no question that my responsibility was to take over the family farm, but the question really was how could farming be successful enough to be sustainable. I attended UNH obtaining a BS degree in Animal science, majoring in dairy science and nutrition. My plan was to revitalize the family dairy farm, but costs, necessary changes and our size seemed to be obstacles in the plan so we didn't take that route. There was a period of floundering and finding the right path while the farm declined. My father refused however to give up and turned down offers from real estate developers to create house lots and condos on our land which would have left us financially secure. We continued farming and lost money every year. Diversification came one idea at a time. Years later, when we first started selling beef, we got below store prices and had to convince our customers that locally grown beef was worth buying. Today, people know the benefits of locally grown beef, seek us out and are paying higher prices. We raise beef, pork, chicken, turkey and started baking, eventually adding a commercial kitchen. The buy local phenomenon has allowed us to save the family farm by working it. My husband and I developed a 5 year plan that has taken 20 years to do, but it involved us both working full time on the farm. Last year, our goal was reached. We are diversified and must do whatever we can ourselves because hiring labor is expensive. Other family members work seasonally, during the Summer farmers market season. The life is tough, but every morning I wake up and can look out over the land worked by my father and his father and his father before that and that connection with the land and the generations of people before me is wealth beyond compare.
