About Us / Independence Farm History: Independence Farm raises alpacas for their luxurious fiber. Our goal is to breed our alpacas toward a quality called lingering fineness. This means that the animal maintains the fleece qualities that it had as a baby (cria) into its adulthood. Unlike the Peruvians, we are partial to black. We think of alpaca as a luxury fiber worn on formal occasions and black is considered formal. We also breed toward docile dispositions. Alpacas are gentle animals by nature and we enjoy this as somewhat therapeutic after a long day at work. There are alpacas on the farm that are for sale, which you can view on our website. As our farm grows, we are learning new things to do with the fiber. It can be sold raw just as it comes off the animal, or with value added by having it washed and carded into roving, or spun into yarn.
