About Us / James West Farm History: Produces Animal Welfare Approved pork.\n\nJames West can’t be positive what year his family farm was established, but he knows that his family came to eastern North Carolina between 1740 and 1750 and has been there ever since. James helped his father and grandfather raise hogs and cows on the family farm where he was born and raised. Now, after almost a 20 year break, James is raising pigs and growing watermelons on that same land in Kinston, North Carolina.\n\nJames’s animals are a mix of Duroc and Chester White hog breeds. James West Farm has “well drained, sandy land and shady woods that mean happy hogs. Happy hogs means better pork,” says James. Also important in producing better pork is James West Farm’s animal husbandry practices. James believes that “raising hogs on the ground, on pasture and feeding them all naturally means being connected to your land, your animals and your product.” As well as being a requirement for membership with the North Carolina Natural Hog Growers Association, Animal Welfare Approved certification is a well-respected name that communicates James’s dedication to the health of the land and his animals. “Strong standards mean strong results,” he asserts.\n\nContinuing the farming traditions that he learned as a child also helps James “pass on knowledge and tradition to [his] family about how hogs are supposed to be raised instead of inside, on floors and out of touch.” James West Farm’s pork can be bought at markets supplied by North Carolina Natural Hog Growers Association and whole hogs can be bought direct from the farm.
