About Us / The Kitchen Pantry History: I have run our local Canon City Farmers Market for 17 years. I live on a farm and raise apples, wine grapes and my vegetable garden and herbs. In running the farmers' market I became aware of the need for a commercial kitchen where people could prepare their local food and be able to sell it legitimately. In 2011, I built our 2000 sq. ft. commercial kitchen in downtown Canon City. It houses three full kitchens with all the equipment people need to prepare food products. I lease it out at hourly and monthly rates. We have people who make BBQ Sauces, Green Chili, Caterers, bakers and canners. In the front of the kitchen we have a retail space with tables and chairs for seating 12 people. We sell some of the products made in the kitchens like jams and jellies, granola bars, bagels, cinnamon rolls, cookies, bread, pies, cakes and donuts.
Our producers in the kitchens have been numerous with some people staying and some not. Being consistent with products, time, and efforts to market are the hardest parts. I feel good about watching people fulfill their dream of making a product, making an extra amount of income for their work and feeling the good energy that goes with being productive.
My third year has been rewarded by my youngest son coming into the business with me. He makes his own products, helps clean up and best of all I get to spend time with him. Did I say he helps clean up? That's one of the surprises in this business. People have different standards of what they consider acceptable. I am thankful for the ones who follow the rules and leave a kitchen like they find it. The others I'm still working on.
Best of all what I will say is that we are raising the awareness of what it means to eat locally and support local. It involves making as much product as we can with local seasonal produce, shopping downtown, and buying home made food products that tastes like grandma used to make without preservatives.
