About Us / L&B Angus History: L&B Angus Beef is Animal Welfare Approved.\n\nBitsy Dotin’s parents raised cattle in Texas during the 1940’s. Bitsy became involved in the family business in 1993 when her father passed away. But it wasn’t until 2002, when her mother died, that she and her husband Larry “got serious.” While Bitsy knew that she wanted to continue her agricultural legacy, Larry, who was a physician, caught her by surprise one day when he told her he wanted to be involved, too. The couple brought part of the family’s herd to Detroit, Texas, and set up L&B Angus Cattle Co. LLC.\n\nRaising cattle in Northeast Texas requires a breed that can thrive in an arid climate and grow well on the fescue grasses that grow in the region. After several years, Bitsy and Larry’s feel their herd has fully adapted to their land and, in addition, their ranch is benefitting from the presence of the cattle, which are helping to restore the grasslands on their property. Regular grazing by the cattle actually helps to encourage a more diverse range of grasses and wild flowers and, in turn, more insects , birds and other wildlife.\n\n“Becoming skilled grassland farmers in our part of Texas has been a real learning process, but we’ve seen a lot of improvements in the last 10 years,” says Bitsy. As she explains, the welfare of their cattle is an absolute priority on the farm and they decided to pursue Animal Welfare Approved certification for their cattle because they felt that “the standards weren’t anything we weren’t already doing.” While they continue to improve their herd and the land they manage, Bitsy and Larry are essentially doing the same thing that her parents did for years—raising cattle sustainably with the highest welfare practices.
