About Us / Little Stream Farm, LLC History: Andrew Presgraves raises laying hens in northern Virginia. He has been raising laying hens for the last eight years, using pasture-based methods to produce tasty, nutritious eggs for his loyal customers. Andrew explains his setup: “I use two separate pastures of approximately 1 1/2 acres and one acre. I rotate the flock every six months so that each pasture can rejuvenate itself. Once I move the flock to the other pasture, I reseed the idle pasture with a certified organic Omega-3 Chicken Forage Blend – a highly-diverse grass seed mix which includes common flax, buckwheat, alfalfa, red clover and trefoil, as well as rye grasses and helps to provide the birds with a diet rich in omega-3 fatty acids.” Andrew’s 50-bird flock is comprised of Rhode Island Reds and a mix of Buff Orpingtons, Barred Rocks, Dominiques, and 25 Black Australorp chicks have just been added – all breeds chosen for their ability to thrive in pasture-based systems. Andrew’s chickens seem to enjoy it: “All of my hens go outside to the pasture every day and they love being outdoors. Between the fresh air, dirt baths, plenty of bugs, good grasses and grains to eat, my hens are loving chicken life.” Andrew sees many benefits of pasture-based management: “Animals that are pasture raised are happier and healthier than animals that cannot roam freely. My hens have never had medicated feed or subtherapeutic antibiotics – they don’t need them.” Andrew sought AWA certification because, he says, “I care about how animals are treated.” He continues, “I want customers of my eggs to know that my hens are treated humanely and live a long happy life.” In addition to Andrew’s egg business, future plans include expanding into hydroponic vegetable production. Andrew sells his eggs directly from the farm and occasionally makes deliveries, depending on the location. Visit the farm’s Facebook page for more information.
