About Us / Locksley Estate - Chrysalis Vineyards & Locksley Estate Farmstead Cheese Co. History: Locksley Estate is the 209-acre home of Chrysalis Vineyards and the Locksley Estate Farmstead Cheese Company. We are located in the beautiful rolling hills of the Northern Virginia Piedmont, outside the village of Middleburg, Virginia.Chrysalis Vineyards has established seventy-one acres of vineyards in the foothills of the Northern Blue Ridge & Bull Run Mountains, and has been recognized as one of the finest estate wineries on the east coast. Renowned for our Norton, Viognier and Albariño grape wines, we combine the best of modern techniques with the traditional hand-crafted winemaking methods of the Old World. We believe that our reputation for quality is the result of our commitment to detail and particularized attention to every aspect of the grape growing and the winemaking processOf particular interest to Chrysalis Vineyards is the native American grape, Norton. In the 1800's, and up until Prohibition, Norton was internationally recognized as the source of distinctively robust red wines with overtones of berry and pitted fruits. Today the Norton grape is enjoying a resurgence of popularity, and a key element of the Chrysalis Vineyards program is to restore this great American heirloom gem to its position of eminence among fine wines. Presently we have the largest planting of Norton in the world. We who live and work at Locksley Estate are also proud of our growing herd of American Milking Devon cows. The Milking Devon was the original American Cow, brought over from North Devonshire, England in 1623. Now extremely rare, we at Locksley Estate find it appropriate that this historical, efficient, hardy, multi-purpose breed is helping us achieve our mission to see Locksley Estate be a shining example of successful rural enterprise. Currently, the American Milking Devon is listed as critically endangered by the American Livestock Breeds Conservancy. We helping to change that. Both the Norton Grape and the American Milking Devon are listed on Slow Food USA's Ark of Taste, and we're proud to be part of the recovery and restoration of America's heirloom foods, and the resulting protection of our agricultural biodiversity.
