About Us / Maple Manor Farms History: Ann & Patrick Dunning raise Animal Welfare Approved meat goats at Maple Manor Farms, outside of Carthage, NC. The goat herd consists of New Zealand Full Blood Kikos and some high percentage purebred Kikos. The Dunning’s chose this unusual breed because it requires little maintenance while on pasture and performs extremely well on the 20-acre pasture-based farm. “Originally from New Zealand, the Kiko goat is right at home in the humid climate of the eastern U.S.,” Ann explains. “It’s an extremely hardy breed and has a high feed conversion rate – in other words, it’s good at converting forage to marketable meat and requires little in the way of supplementary feed.” \nUsing the highest welfare standards to raise their goats, they are proud of their stock and are dedicated to producing goats that are easy to handle and perform well. “All our goats have health records and performance data based on weights, as well as information on offspring weights,” Ann explains. Their high standards and consistent breeding practices have helped develop a solid foundation of repeat customer business.\nAnn applied for AWA certification because it shows her customers that Maple Manor Farms is consistently meeting the highest welfare standards for managing livestock. “An increasing number of customers want to know that animals are treated well from birth to slaughter, without hormones or unnecessary use of antibiotics,” she explains. “AWA has a reputation for having the highest standards, so we knew that if we could meet them, we would be providing the best care for our animals.”\nOne of the Dunning’s goals is to share knowledge and resources with others who are interested in raising goats. Ann and Patrick offer customized farm tours for the public and other farmers, highlighting their sustainable farming practices, health information, performance, bloodlines and record-keeping for their goats and handmade livestock equipment ideas. The Dunning’s approach to customer education and service fits well with their philosophy on transparency and high welfare practices. \nMaple Manor Farms’ products and breeding stock are available for purchase directly from the farm.
