About Us / Meadowfed Meats, LLC History: Victoria and Kelly Strauser got their farming start with alpacas in 2008, then quickly realized as the economy started its long decline that to be a successful farming operation in these uncertain times meant diversifying their operations. In 2012 we purchased our 40-acre farm in the Driftless area of southwestern WI which is now home to a variety of critters including huacaya alpacas (for wool), Icelandic sheep (meat and wool), Sweetgrass heritage turkeys, meat chickens, laying hens, New Zealand White rabbits (for meat) and Velveteen Lop rabbits (for pets/show). The farm is also home to four farm/house cats and Gypsy the Border Collie.
The biggest challenges for us included having no actual barn on the property, and no fencing other than a 4-strand barbed-wire fence (not exactly sheep-proof!). Not wanting to spend a lot of money shortly after purchasing the farm, we opted to think creatively and find solutions that didn't include a lot of building or permanent fencing. A 10x30’ chicken building became the “cheep shed,” housing both chickens and rabbits. One bay of the haymow in back of the machine shed became a cozy space for the ruminants. And a lot of electric net fences became the means to our mobile grazing system which allows us to graze all of our animals on pasture during the growing season without returning to the same grazed areas all season.
Although we are “beginner farmers,” we volunteered on other farms and studied a lot of farming management methods prior to purchasing our land, and we continue to learn new techniques in order to improve our management practices and ensure what we do improves the health of the animals and the land.
