One of the most frequent questions we receive is if we are an organic farm. We have chosen a method that we call "naturally grown." Almost all of our crops are chemical free. We never use herbicides, and we use organic approved pesticides only when absolutely necessary. We use a light application of nitrogen fertilizer. We also use a cover-crop strategy of planting clover or other crops to provide nutrients and cover for the fields.
For some crops, we use sheets of plastic to cover the ground - this warms the soil so that our produce can be reaped earlier and later in the season. This also keeps the weeds down and the moisture in the soil.
GMO is a big "no-no" on our farm. We carefully select our seed sources to avoid the possibility of using genetically modified seeds. About half of our seeds are of "heirloom" varieties - generally, this means that the type has been around for at least 50 years. We also plant a lot of F1 hybrids - but this is different than GMO. F1 hybrids result from the natural crossing of two lines of the same type of plant species. GMO result from genetically engineering plants with DNA from bacteria, viruses or other plants and animals
