About Us / Missing Jack Ranch History: Raises Animal Welfare Approved grass-fed beef cattle. Beef sold direct from farm; smallest amounts are ¼ cow; call or email to reserve and choose cuts. \n\nWhen Mike and Janis Tremper bought their undeveloped rural property on the Central Coast of California, four wild burrows lived in the canyon where the ranch sits that no one would claim. While they labored to put up fencing for their horses, one jack (a male burrow) in particular would harass their mares to no end until it was decided that something had to be done. With the help of some neighbors, they corralled the burrows with the intention of taking them into the auction. But there were only three. The troublesome jack was never seen again. While the episode has sparked a lot of theories since then, it also gave them a name—Missing Jack Ranch was born.\n\nAside from their horses, Janis and Mike raise Animal Welfare Approved Angus beef cattle which they have bred with Australian Angus bloodlines to finish well on the native and naturalized grasses of Missing Jack Ranch. With support from their adult children and interested grandchildren, Janis and Mike are proud to run a “mom and pop” business and have transformed the property which once lacked any infrastructure, into a functioning ranch. They are proud that Missing Jack Ranch cattle are raised, birth through slaughter, on the ranch in Pine Canyon, so cattle are never shipped for processing.\n\nMike and Janis have become AWA certified because it is important to them and their customers that their cattle are raised using the highest welfare practices. Missing Jack Ranch customers are pleased to know that their animal husbandry practices have been approved by AWA auditing staff to verify that they use high-welfare animal welfare practices to produce meat that is tender, marbled, and healthier than grain-fed beef.
