Dale grew up on a farm in South Dakota and has been farming since 1955. On the climatic difference between South Dakota and North Carolina Dale says it’s like “going from your freezer to your living room.” Needless to say, he is happy with the move. Dale has also worked for Caterpillar, Inc., the large equipment manufacturer, which has given him a wealth of skills that prove useful around the farm.\n\nNelson Ranch currently maintains a flock of 60 laying hens for their nutritious, tasty, pastured eggs. A herd of 25 momma cows and their offspring also call the farm home. Dale has been working on the genetic quality of his cows for a number of years and says, “We pride ourselves on good quality stock, good bloodlines, and on not just going with fads but with proven lines - and improving upon those lines.”\n\nDale’s two daughters had a significant impact on his decision to start a pasture-based livestock operation. “They would beg me to bring them eggs,” he recalls. Dale understood that his daughters were not alone in their concern about where their food came from, and in their desire to choose good food. He realized that there was a market for good, clean, high-quality meats and dairy from pasture-based family farms. Nelson Ranch sought out Animal Welfare Approved certification as a way to reflect his farm’s adherence to those qualities and to address the challenge of transparency in labeling. “I want to help people understand that they have a choice in the food they eat.” Nelson Ranch is proud to be on the solution side of our national diet challenges and to produce high quality food for its community.
