About Us / North Valley Farms Chevre, Inc. History: North Valley Farms is a small family owned and operated goat dairy in the northern part of the Sacramento Valley. Located in Tehama County, the farm is home to North Valley Farms Chévre, Inc., a farmstead goat cheese making facility. Mark and Deneane Ashcraft raise their herd of award-winning AWA dairy goats on 60 acres of lush organic fields and handcraft their unique line of specialty goat cheeses in their state-of-the-art creamery. Deneane began breeding and raising dairy goats in 1990 and has spent many years carefully developing her present dairy herd, which consists of superior genetic Toggenburg, LaMancha, Saanen, and Experimental breeds. \nA sixth consecutive generation California farmer, Deneane spends most days milking and caring for the goats, monitoring grazing and forage, and handcrafting signature cheeses. She is the full-time herdsman and milker for the goat herd, as well as cheese maker, while Mark takes care of the farming end and the direct marketing of the cheese on a regional and local level. “I don’t think we can’t not farm,” laughs Mark.\nAs one of only a handful of small family-owned and operated farmsteads in California, Mark and Deanne guarantee that their cheeses are traceable to their goat herd and pastures – with no exceptions. In 2009, North Valley Farms Chévre became the first commercial goat dairy in the U.S. to earn Animal Welfare Approved certification. “AWA’s standards are comprehensive and deal with every aspect of the goats’ lives,” Mark explains. “We get asked about the welfare of our animals a lot and the Animal Approved Welfare logo is a nice fit of us. It lets our customers know that our goats are out running around in the grass, being goats, and that we’re not a confinement operation.”\nNorth Valley Farms Chevre products are available at farmers’ markets, retailers, and restaurants in the Sacramento Valley area, as well as online.
