About Us / Patient Wait Farm History: Gail Cooley, with the help of her husband Michael (Mike) and daughter Morgan, raises AWA laying hens and turkeys in upstate South Carolina. Patient Wait is located on 20 acres of rolling hills and beautiful old oak trees. Several native fruit trees provide food and shade for the turkeys and other livestock.\nThe goal at Patient Wait Farm is to provide high quality products, animals, and service to the community. Being cognizant of the environmental impacts of farming is a fundamental component of their philosophy. “We are 100% pasture based,” says Gail. “Our animals are only confined at night for predator protection. The benefit of pasture-based management is that it is kinder to the land.”\nThe Cooley’s interest in farming is a recent development. Gail explains, “We are not from farming families - I’m a Jersey Girl. We just feel a calling to farm and we are passionate about sustainability. We started with horses, but were inspired to pursue farming as a family business. We introduced heritage turkeys to our operation in 2009 and have been evolving ever since.”\nGail and Mike selected poultry breeds for very specific reasons. “We chose Narragansett and Jersey Buff turkeys because they are docile, and because they are great foragers. For our laying hen flock we decided on Rhode Island Red and (New) French Maran hens because of their dependable egg production.”\nReceiving the Animal Welfare Approved certification for her turkeys and laying hens has helped the Cooleys set their products apart in the marketplace. Gail says, “The AWA certification and label gives our customers confidence.” She also feels the technical expertise provided by AWA has been instrumental in creating a successful, working farm system: “We see AWA as a valuable resource since we are ‘newbies.’”\nGail’s and Mike’s long-term goals include opening a camp and retreat facility to teach adults and children about sustainability. Gail says, “We want to teach people about taking an active role in their food, whether they are producers or consumers.” AWA-certified turkeys and eggs from Patient Wait Farms are available at area farmers markets and other outlets.
