About Us / R&N Farm History: Raises Animal Welfare Approved Dairy Goats.\n\nRalph Hayes has been farming most of his life on his third generation farm in central Alabama. Fifteen years ago, Ralph began raising goats, which were smaller and easier to handle than the cattle he and his family were accustomed to. Finding a market for his goat milk used to be his biggest challenge, but now, his partnership with Deborah Stone at Stone Hollow Farmstead allows him to focus on caring for and milking the animals, while Deborah makes farmstead goat cheese with his milk and markets it under the Stone Hollow Farmstead label.\n\nWhen they have time, Ralph’s his wife, Donna, and daughter, Nicole, help him to raise his Saanen, Nubian, and La Mancha goats. Ten months out of the year, when Deborah Stone’s dairy goats are lactating, he also boards her herd and milks them for her, transporting the milk to her creamery.\n\nDeborah encouraged Ralph to become Animal Welfare Approved and once he learned a little about the program, he knew it was a good thing. “I don’t want people to mistreat animals,” says Ralph. “I believe in letting them be as free as I can and [AWA] let’s people know that I care.” He is proud that his goats stay on pasture 12 months out of the year, weather permitting. “It’s their choice, not mine,” says Ralph about his goats staying inside on a rainy day.
