About Us / Seattle Tilth TOP Farm History: Farm Incubator Program The Farm Incubator Program provides small farm business training and support to develop confident, financially independent individuals who can apply their experience to farming and other related businesses.Seattle Tilth is working together with Burst for Prosperity to help refugees, immigrants and other low-income individuals overcome obstacles to creating small farming businesses. To do this, we are creating a regional "farm incubator" which provides:Access to land at subsidized ratesA comprehensive educational program covering farming, business planning, operations and marketingOn-site mentorship from experienced farmersAccess to equipment, water and other necessary farming inputsAssistance in creating marketing channels for products Woven throughout the incubator experience will be continuous matching of classroom time with hands-on interactions; from developing a viable business plan, to negotiating a lease agreement, to learning about the organic certification process. Participating farmers will also receive one-on-one support for tasks essential to the operation of a successful small farm.At the heart of this project is the idea that participating farmers learn best by actually operating a small farm in a supportive environment. This learn-by-doing concept has already been proven successful at other nationally recognized agricultural small farm and new farmer trainings.
