About Us / Spellcast Farm History: Michelle Bernard and Walter McSwain raise Animal Welfare Approved dairy cows, meat chickens, laying ducks, and rabbits at Spellcast Farm, in Lincolnton, North Carolina. The farm was established when Michelle faced an unexpected career change and opted for farming, purchasing her first goat in 2008. Walter (Wally) joined the farm in January 2009, having previously raised Boer meat goats and sheep.\nSpellcast Farm strives towards sustainability, diversification and raising animals that produce healthy products for the consumer. Michelle says that achieving the highest feed quality is a key area of focus on the farm: “We stopped feeding corn, soy and GMO products in 2011 because we feel that these ingredients are unhealthy – not only for our animals to consume, but also for our customers who consume their products,” she explains. “This requires a great deal of management and attention to the health and condition of our animals on a daily basis.”\nSpellcast Farm relies heavily on working dogs to keep the system running smoothly. “We make full use of our fantastic Border Collie, Gel, and our livestock guard dog, Rose, on the farm,” says Michelle. “They enable us to keep our animals in this extensively pastured manner.”\nMichelle and Wally chose AWA certification because, as Michelle explains, “We believe that the Animal Welfare Approved certification recognizes farmers who raise truly pastured and humanely raised animals.”\nSpellcast Farm’s AWA-certified products are available at area farmers’ markets or directly from the farm by appointment.
