About Us / Stamps Family Farm History: Lamb and pork from Stamps Family Farm is Animal Welfare Approved.\n\nThe Stamps family moved to their current 40 acre farm near Chariton in 2009, after being introduced to farming and growing while restoring old homes in the downtown areas near Des Moines. Initially, they purchased an empty lot and planted fruit trees, but they soon realized what they really wanted was a lot more land. “We looked for a long time to find a farm with the right mix of pasture, woods, water, and an old home we could be comfortable in,” says Chad Stamps. “The wait was worth it.” About a third of the land is taken up by a 7 acre pond and its surrounding features, with the remainder comprising pasture, rough grazing and woodland.\nAs Chad explains, the family started with little to no experience in farming: “But we’ve come a long way since then,” he says. “We currently raise about 70 Animal Welfare Approved Berkshire pigs each year on pasture, as well as a small flock of mainly Icelandic sheep.” Stamps Family Farm offer a range of meat, including Bratwurst and Italian sausages, bacon and the usual variety of pork cuts. “But most people find buying a whole or half pig is a more economical choice than buying cuts,” Chad explains. “Our flock is still small so meat lamb quantities are limited as we build up numbers.”\nThe farm is also home to a dairy cow, llama, and traditional breed chickens that share the pasture. The Stamps family are planting a fruit orchard on the farm, and cultivating both wild and domestic berries, all with the goal in mind to raise their animals in a kind and sustainable way, and to provide the highest quality end product to their customers.\n\n“I want my children to have the knowledge and skill set that comes with growing up on a farm,” says Chad. “I want them to see where their food comes from, and to understand fully what it means to be a steward of the land and the animals on it. Raising our animals in the kindest way is a priority for us, as is improving and tending the land in our care.”\nStamps Family Farm AWA-certified pork and lamb is available directly from the farm.
