About Us / Stella Gardens, Michael Fields Agricultural Institute History: Stella Gardens is a beautiful 2+ acre organic and biodynamic growing space behind the main building of Michael Fields Agricultural Institute . The gardens were established in 1984 as a place where community could come together to peaceably and spiritually lead discussions on preserving, changing, and improving the quality of our farms and soils. Since 1997, Stella Gardens has served as an outdoor classroom dedicated to training the next generation of young farmers, as well as those simply interested in learning about sustainable agriculture. Though our young farmer programs continue to evolve, they have consistently focused on learning through an intensive hands-on approach that builds knowledge, confidence, passion, and physical strength. The small scale of our gardens provides an excellent setting for learning about composting, soil fertility and management, hand-building raised beds, hand sowing, transplanting, cultivation, and harvesting. Our past marketing approaches have included direct to consumer marketing through on-site farm sales, farmers markets, and CSA, as well as wholesale accounts to grocers and chefs. At present, our goal is to move toward a more perennial-based growing system, selling both our perennials and annuals in our farm stand at Michael Fields, as well as to wholesalers and other growers.
