About Us / The Forge at Dragon's Gate History: Andrew Harris, a farrier by trade, and his wife Dawn Harris had raised horses for over 40 years before they began raising goats for meat and dairy. The couple had previously worked on several cattle farms in Texas before they moved to upstate New York and purchased hilly land in the Finger Lakes region near Ithaca, initially to raise horses. \nHowever, a requirement under New York state law meant that the couple must operate a “farming activity” in order for their land to be considered a farm. As they had raised goats as pets for many years, Andrew and Dawn decided to expand their herd to include Alpine and Saanen dairy goats and Boer Cross meat goats. They also knew that while the lush but steep landscape of their farm wouldn’t work well for raising cattle, it would be perfect for grazing goats. \nAlthough the goats turned out to be more high-maintenance than the few they had kept as pets for years, Andrew and Dawn enjoy each day working with the goats. When asked why they joined the Animal Welfare Approved program, Andrew was enthusiastic: “It’s just the way we treat the animals. The program really fits with our animal husbandry practices, our beliefs, and our lifestyle.” In addition, he was inspired to add the Animal Welfare Approved label to his product, as he saw how useful it is to help set his product apart from the other similar operations. “The AWA label really appeals to our customer base,” he explains. “The people who visit us at the market often have lots of questions about how we raise the animals. The Animal Welfare Approved label really helps us to communicate the way we farm to them.” \nFor more information about the farm or to purchase product, email firstname.lastname@example.org.
