About Us / The Neighborhood Farm History: The Neighborhood Farm was started in 2008 to bring more local food to the suburbs. This alternative way of farming was inspired by the victory gardens of WWII (where a shortage of goods during the war led people to plant their own food), and the concept of gardening in people's backyards followed, as a practical way to bring a farm to the suburbs. Committed to educating people about farming and gardening, The Neighborhood Farm hopes to inspire folks to eat locally, healthily, and to grow on their own.It is essentially a collection of market gardens located mostly in private yards around Needham, MA. Homeowners lend a portion of their yard and The Neighborhood Farm will grow vegetables, herbs and flowers. In exchange, the owners receive produce from the gardens during the growing season. All crops are grown naturally without synthetic pesticides, herbicides, or fertilizers. Produce is then sold at farmers' markets. Because produce is grown in people's backyards though, what is grown is not certified organic because it is impossible to gain certification through the nature of this practice.
