About Us / The Veggie Mart History:
My wife and I began our farming adventure on a small scale about a dozen years ago. We fenced in a 60' X 60' garden area immediately behind our house and successfully grew tomatoes, bell peppers, okra and cantaloupes. Later we added cow peas, sweet peas, carrots, onions and a few chili plants with mixed results.
Our biggest challenge was to install a watering system that would provide adequate water without getting the foliage wet which, we soon discovered, killed the plants in this 100-plus desert heat. We did this by punching, then drilling, tiny holes every 6" in 1/4" black tubing. This sort of worked as long as the ground was perfectly level - which it wasn't. After a lot of raking we were fairly level and the plants were happy ... until the carbonates in the well water began clogging the tiny holes. We spent many hours with map tacks opening up these little holes, but we were able to grow a lot of tomatoes - several hundred pounds - enough to can a LOT of tomato puree. Hooray!
Fast forward a few years and a few acres and we were growing more than we could sell at the local farmer's market, so we found an affordable building in town which we purchased with our savings. Shortly thereafter, I resigned as President of the farmer's market and my wife and I devoted our full time to planting, growing, harvesting and selling our delicious and healthy veggies and melons to a lot of happy customers.
To date we have been able to sell great produce at a price that beats Walmart and Lowes prices. It worked!!
Our farming season normally extends from mid-April to mid-October, during which time we sell only our locally grown produce, fresh from our farm to your table.
