About Us / Thompson Street Farm LLC History: My farm was created out of a need to provide organic food to our daughter who had a stroke before she was born and as a result has serious medical problems. At age 2 the doctors at the Children's Hospital started her on a special diet to control seizures called the Ketogenic Diet. With this diet, we needed to feed her clean unprocessed food and because of the current food labeling laws there was no guarantee that the frozen, canned or fresh produce I purchased were not treated with chemicals. As a Mother who will do anything for her child, I started growing all our own food to guarantee she was getting nothing but the best.
My daughter is no longer on this diet and my husband and I decided to expand our garden into a small commercial farming operation and offer our community clean, GMO free produce. I specialize in growing small leafy greens and small vegetables such as baby carrots, green beans, mushrooms just to name a few. I've since expanded and now lease 3/4 of an acre of land from a farmer here in town.
On this plot I've been experimenting with growing small grains organically such as Amaranth and Flint corn. Its still a work in progress as the soil is in desperate need of some good old fashioned organic TLC. Therefore, it will take a few more years to get the soil rich enough to increase yields for a commercial market. In the meantime, my shiitake mushroom experiment in our woods is a huge success and I'm now offering them for sale.
The kind of farming that I do is called SPIN Farming - Small Plot IN-tensive Farming and I teach a full day workshop in the off season in the Hartford CT area. This workshop is designed to those who have no agriculture background or experience. For more information on SPIN check out my website or SPIN Farming website www.spinfarming.com
