About Us / Thousand Island Winery History: The Thousand Islands Winery is located in the heart of New York's Thousand Islands region as the most northern farm winery in New York State; the Thousand Islands Winery is located along the majestic St. Lawrence River on a historic 38 acre farm. The farm was established in 1881 and the winery began its operations in 2002. The owners are Steve and Erika Conaway. Erika is originally from Seattle, Washington and Steve Conaway retired from the U.S. Army as a Major in 2003. During his Army career he served in Afghanistan and spent five years in Germany. The Thousand Islands Region reminded him of the time he had spent in Germany along the Rhine River. He found many similarities between the St. Lawrence River and the Rhine River in Germany. Both areas have incredible scenic beauty, gorgeous stone castles, large tour boats, and many visiting international tourists. However, he noticed the St. Lawrence River lacked vineyards and wineries. He saw this as an opportunity and has since then set out to change that. He has helped to transform the St. Lawrencce River Valley into the "Rhine River of North America".In 2003, the Thousand Islands Winery opened with a starting inventory of 1,300 gallons of wine. The winery has since then experienced rapid growth and currently produces approximately 50,000 gallons of wine. Some of the primary grape varieties being planted in the Thousand Islands Region include Frontenac, Marquette, Frontenac Gris, and LaCrescent. The winery has received numerous awards at International and National wine competitions and has become a premier wedding destination for the Thousand Islands. The Conaways invite you to taste some of their world class wines being crafted in the beautiful Thousand Islands.
