About Us / Three Belle Cheese / ATK&R Farm History: The Rhynes (Tammy, Darren, and three children) have been raising dairy goats since 1999 and started milking them for business in 2005 under the name ATK&R Farm. Our youngest daughter (born May 2003) was raised on our own goats' milk. We shipped part of our milk to Central Pennsylvania Milk Marketing Cooperative (located on Rt 655 between Belleville and Reedsville, PA) until spring 2011 and the rest was made into cheese by local cheese makers. We market cheese under our label, Three Belle Cheese, and the local cheesemakers also market cheese made from our milk and theirs under their own labels. However, due to work commitments outside the farm, we cut back our cheese business in 2011, ceasing to ship milk to the co-op, dropping the weekly farmer's markets, and selling all of our milk to a cheese maker in Turbotville, PA, and another in Cresco, PA.In 2012 we are rebuilding by engaging in local farmer's markets and wine events in PA and western/upstate NY (see 2012 Markets below). Previous 5 Years: From 2007-09, cheese marketed under our Three Belle Cheese label was made using our milk and the cheesemakers' milk by the Nussbaums of Apple Tree Goat Dairy near Richfield, PA, the Shelleys of Premium Choices near Richfield, and the Zeisets of Millersburg, PA. We also supplied our milk to the Barretts of Fallsdale Farm Creamery, Tyler Hill, PA, in 2008-09. In 2010, the Barretts sold their cheesemaking equipment to a fellow Central PA Milk Marketing Cooperative member, Peter Martin of Broadway Acres Farm, between Washingtonville & Milton, PA, and he became our primary cheesemaker in spring 2010. Darren deployed to Afghanistan for a year starting in February 2010, so Tammy and Peter did markets together, selling cheese under the Broadway Acres Farm label. Peter is not allowed by his religion to market cheese online so we worked together to get the cheese to markets. Tammy, her parents (the Kulps), and our children helped market the cheese by providing transportation and personnel to cover farmer's markets each weekend in two or three of the following locations: Barryville (NY), State College, Gettysburg, Bellefonte, Lewisburg, Boalsburg, and/or Selinsgrove (PA). We also sold and offered tastings of our cheese at special events that were posted on the USDA site. 2010-2011 events included the Shikellemy State Park (PA) Festivals, Mount Nittany Winery (PA) and Bethel Woods (NY) Fall Festivals, the Great Taste Pittsburgh Food and Cooking Show, and the Christkindl Market in Mifflinburg (PA). 2013 Markets: We are taking a break from selling cheese this year for the most part. The only markets we plan to do in 2013 are Mt Nittany Winery on 22 June and 26 October, and the 25th Mifflinburg Christkindl Market on 12-14 December. Restaurants/Stores: We infrequently sell fresh plain chevre to Harrison's Wine Grill & Catering of State College, PA, for use in their menu; Chef Harrison's restaurant is located in the Hilton Garden Inn Hotel on 1221 East College Avenue. The Selinsgrove Brew Pub in Selinsgrove, PA, uses our chevre at their establishment at various times of the year. IMPORTANT NOTE: As of July 2013, we are selling all of our goat milk in bulk to a distributor to be made into pet food. Therefore, we are not making or selling cheese until further notice except for the two markets on our calendar in October and December, and to the restaurants noted above. Our Goats and other Farm Animals: We have a mixed herd of approximately 100 dairy goats, of which about 40 are milkers. Our herd is comprised of Alpines, LaManchas, Nubians, Oberhaslis, Saanens, Toggenbergs, and Recorded Grades. The farm, which has been in Tammy's family since 1957, is located just south of Mifflinburg off of PA Route 304. We also have seven llamas, two Guernsey and seven beef cattle, four miniature horses, one regular-sized horse, two donkeys, five breeding and market lambs, two pigs, seven potbellied pigs, and several dozen ducks, geese, and chickens. Oh, and don't forget the 8+ barn cats and our 8 dogs - Border Collie (Oreo), Austrailian Shepherd (Boots), Beagle (Stevie), Pug (Roxie), Puggle (Rockette), Mutt (Sadie), Pomeranian (Dawnie), and English Bulldog (Sadie).
