About Us / Turtle Mist Farm History: Bob and Ginger Sykes moved to North Carolina from Maryland and started their farm in 2005 after working for more than 30 years in corporate America. Summers spent on a great-uncle's farm in Indiana fostered a long-time dream of Bob's to have a small farm. As a young man Bob read "Silent Spring" by Rachel Carson, and "The Population Bomb" by Paul Ehrlich, causing him to be very sensitive to environmental issues, especially the use of pesticides. Turtle Mist Farm is small but we have a wide variety of animals and a market garden devoted to unusual vegetables. The Farm currently has pasture-raised laying hens, hair sheep, heritage turkeys, Muscovy ducks, quail, Gelbvieh beef cattle and Berkshire hogs. All of our animals are raised without the use of hormones, antibiotics, or steroids. Our vegetables are produced with organically approved pesticides and natural herbicides. Our meats, poultry and produce are available directly from the farm or at the Wake Forest Farmer’s Market on Saturday mornings from 8 a.m. to 12 noon.
