About Us / Virginia Gold Orchard History: Virginia Gold Orchard is a family owned business established by Paul and YoungSuk Estabrook. Together with their two children, they decided to start an Asian Pear orchard in 1990. Asian pears are unique, but what makes Virginia Gold Orchard special is the fact that its "home grown" pears are considered by many to be the best they have ever tasted. This family business that virtually started from scratch has become internationally known as having the best tasting Asian pears. The orchard presently consists of about 4,000 trees from sixteen different varieties selected for production. The Estabrooks have planted a two acre section for testing and for sharing information cooperatively with the Department of Agriculture Research Station. This "testing" area also contains over 25 different named varieties and several original hybrids bred by YoungSuk Estabrook.Asian Pears at Virginia Gold OrchardVirginia Gold Orchard has a program for the development of better tasting varieties more suited for our climate and with natural disease resistance. This program was started in 1991 and continues today. Virginia Gold Orchard has developed several new varieties. This has been a special horticultural project by Mrs. Estabrook for pears that will perform better in our Virginia climate and soils. The result of many years of careful development, testing and trials has given us two new varieties available for general sales. After introduction of these two varieties in 2008, there was an immediate waiting list for some of the 2009 crop."Sweet-N-Sour" is a high flavor pear that brings out the sweet pear flavor with a hint of tartness. This large pear has small brown lenticels on its clear yellow skin"Sunburst" is a large sweet pear that excels in flavor and sugar over the traditional varieties developed for the Asian climate. It has a unique brown russeted area around the stem area of the pear. In addition, Mrs Estabrook has several other promising varieties not yet fully tested.
