About Us / Wallace Farm History: Alton Wallace raises Animal Welfare Approved pigs in southeast North Carolina. He is the latest member of a multigenerational family tradition of raising hogs outdoors: “My parents had hogs growing up, and my whole life we had hogs. It’s very natural to me.” Alton and his wife now own 21 acres of pasture and woods, where they raise four sows and up to 40 market pigs at any given time.\nAlton explains that he specifically chose the Red Duroc breed because “they grow fast and the sun doesn’t bother them.” Alton knows from experience: “My pigs have a little Yorkshire in them and some were born white. When the sun was out, the red ones would be eating and the white ones would stay in the shade.” The red pigs were more productive and Alton now selects for the red hide, as well as other important traits.\nRotational pasture-based management is the keystone of Alton’s farm and this approach benefits his operation in many ways: “If you can rotate pastures on a 2 3 week basis, it doesn’t hurt the land, it doesn’t hurt the grass, and there’s no smell.” Alton put a lot of thought into the foundation of his pastures, and is now seeing the benefits. He sowed his pastures with Rygrass and Stargraze in 2007 and 2008, and the grass is now tall, healthy, and resilient. Having forages with strong roots allows Alton to rotate continuously: “The hogs will eat the grass and leave the roots and move on. So when I rotate them out of that paddock, the grass quickly grows back for next time.” Alton is also a member of the North Carolina Natural Hog Growers Association, a cooperative of AWA hog producers who sell to restaurants, retailers, and food processors throughout the region. His long-term goals include buying an additional 25 50 acres of land to significantly expand production.\nAlton believes AWA certification reinforces his credibility in the eyes of customers: “I believe in raising the best pork possible, and I decided to become AWA-certified so people will know it really is the best they can buy.” \nTo order AWA pork from Wallace Farm call or email Alton Wallace at (252) 521-1117 or firstname.lastname@example.org.
