About Us / Washburn Ranch and Orchard History: Located in Southern Rockingham County, North Carolina, the Washburn family has owned and managed 280-acre Washburn Ranch for almost 100 years. “We raise our herd of Hereford and Angus beef cattle on our lush green pasture,” says rancher Mark Adkins. “We produce top quality beef without artificial hormones or steroids, and without reliance on antibiotics. The cattle eat a year-round pasture-based diet. We grow and cut our own hay without the use of pesticides and herbicides.” \nThe Washburn family takes great pride in their cattle herd: “Our female cows have been members of the same family unit since the 1920s. We select the strongest and most healthy heifers and keep them to be mother cows. We never import cattle from the stockyards or mix our cows with others to ensure the herd stays healthy and free of pathogens. Even the bulls come from local farmers. We know every hoof that steps on the farm is that of a clean and healthy animal.” \nMark does not believe that any cattle should be kept in confinement: “The reason we felt AWA was the right route for us was that we want to be able to educate people that cattle should be treated like they would be if they lived in the wild. Our cattle are happier and healthier; they are living like they should. Even our calves stay with their mothers until they wean them.”\nAs well as the animal welfare benefits of pasture-based management, this management approach is also important for the taste and quality of Washburn Ranch beef: “Our meat is significantly leaner and more flavorful than from cattle raised on a corn-based diet. The cattle are rotated to new pastures routinely to ensure they always have plenty of fresh grass to eat, as well as the occasional acorn, apple, pear and persimmon that they forage on the ranch! In extreme winter weather, when snow and ice prevent grazing, we will occasionally offer a small quantity of grain mixed in their hay to increase body heat and maintain weight through the winter season.” \nWashburn Ranch beef is available in ¼, ½ or whole cow quantities. Price is determined by hanging finished weight. “Our price includes processing fees and free delivery to northern Guilford and southern Rockingham counties,” Mark explains. “When it comes to our beef processing procedure, we want our customers to understand the progress - every animal is taken directly from pasture to an AWA reviewed processor 15 miles away, where it is humanely slaughtered with a USDA representative in attendance to ensure the animal is healthy for consumption. The carcass is dry aged for 12–14 days, before it is processed and packaged into cut selections. Each pound is vacuum sealed in individual packets. Cuts are then frozen and ready for pick up.
