About Us / Watterson Ranch History: Scott Miller is the sixth generation in his family to be brought up and raise cattle on Watterson Ranch, a historic farm established in the 1850s. While much has changed in the time since its foundation, Scott is once again raising cattle on grass like his ancestors did 150 years ago. With the help of his brother Tim’s business knowledge, his mother Suzanne’s bookkeeping and his wife Trina’s work with the horses and cattle, Watterson Ranch remains a true family farm. \nScott started working full time on the family ranch in 1993, when it functioned as a cow-calf operation—raising calves on pasture, then selling them to feedlots to fatten up on a grain diet. Now he is proud to raise his cattle, which are a cross of Charolais bulls and Brangus cows, on a diet strictly of grass. His cattle don’t receive hormones or unnecessary antibiotics and he practices crop and pasture rotation to ensure his animals get the best nutrition. He is pleased to be certified by Animal Welfare Approved, a label that his Austin-area customers recognize and respect, and is certified by the American Grassfed Association as well.\nThe threat of droughts and wild fires in recent years has been extremely challenging for Scott’s cattle operation. While in good years he is able to store hay for the dry season, in the midst of continuing droughts, hay runs low and water for the cattle is scarce. Despite these challenges, the Millers are rooted in their community, not only raising high-quality meat to be sold to local consumers, but also actively participating in their church and local schools.
