About Us / When Pigs Can Fly Farm History: Seth Ringer raises AWA-certified pigs at When Pigs Can Fly Farm in Marion County, Florida. Seth explains that he selected the Mulefoot hog because of its endangered status, along with the fact that it produces “some real tasty pork.” The farm currently has three purebred Mulefoot gilts from two different bloodlines, along with an unrelated registered boar, which will provide the foundation for Seth’s future breeding program. \nAlong with the Mulefoot hogs, Seth also raises Tamworth and Hereford gilts and crosses them with the Mulefoot to produce hybrid meat hogs. Tamworths are known for their ability to thrive outdoors and for their lean meat. Hereford hogs, named after Hereford cattle for their red and white coloring, also thrive on pasture and are prized for their docile temperaments. By incorporating the best qualities of these breeds, Seth is helping not only to preserve rare breed genetics, but also to provide high quality pork for his community. \n\nPigs at When Pigs Can Fly Farm are raised outdoors, on pasture or range, where they are free to root and forage as pigs do naturally. The natural weaning method Seth employs allows piglets to get used to the custom-rolled barley and cracked corn diet that all pigs at the farm eat, as well as the orchard grass and alfalfa hay they can choose. This high-welfare management is a fundamental component of AWA certification and is known to have environmental, nutritional, and culinary benefits.\nFor more information – or to purchase a barbeque hog from When Pigs Can Fly Farm – contact Seth at (239) 253-4766.
