About Us / Will French Farm History: Will French raises AWA pigs in central Arkansas, just outside of Little Rock. His 15 acres of rolling hills are half wooded and half pasture. Will’s pigs range over nine acres, and he has been steadily improving his system since he started raising pastured pigs three years ago. “I use a rotational grazing system that moves our pigs through wooded and pasture areas,” says Will, explaining that the most important aspect of his husbandry practices is providing a natural environment: “I feel like I try to give the pigs the most natural environment they can be in and still be productive. They have free access to range and root and do what pigs like to do. They get fresh ranging area frequently and never have to run through an overused, overcrowded area.”\nWill has total of three Hampshire sows and one Hereford boar, breeds chosen for their high meat quality and easy care. Will says, “All of my sows are gentle mothers and are very loveable and love to be scratched.” AWA certification was a natural fit for the farm: “I became Animal Welfare Approved because it means people know my animals are well taken care of,” he explains. “I also agreed with the practices outlined by AWA and was already utilizing many of them.”\nThe benefit of pasture-based management, as Will sees it, is that the pigs seem happier in the natural environment of pastures and woods – which makes his job as a farmer easier: “They require less maintenance than pigs in confinement operations. I use fewer medicines, and best of all I don't have to deal with all the manure. I let Mother Nature take care of that.”\nWill plans to continue selling AWA piglets to other farms in the program, as well as selling finished pigs ready to take to the butcher. Will adds, “I also have a chicken egg laying operation that is pasture based that I hope to get AWA approved in the near future.” Will currently sells finished pigs through Farm Girl Natural Foods in Perryville, AR.\nFor more information on feeder pigs or finished animals, contact Will at email@example.com.
