Grass - Fed
About Us / Hammock Farm Gourmet History: We work our farm to be a sustainable network. Our chickens fertilize the pastures that grow nutritious grass for our rotational grazing of the sheep, horses, goats, and pigs. The chickens also eat the caterpillars and bugs that are detrimental to the pastures. Used bedding and manures go into the compost pile and 1 year later go into the garden to grow our fruits and vegetables. Any unusable or surplus fruits and veggies go to feed the chickens, sheep, goats, or pigs.
Our pasture rotation between species helps us control internal parasites for all the animals so our use of organic dewormers is infrequent. We source our animal bedding as much as possible from on farm leaves, pine needles, and wood chips. This bedding, when cleaned out of the barn, is a good mix of manure and bedding and is composted for to kill any weed seeds or harmful bacteria and is then used as a growing medium in the garden.
The care of our livestock is utmost in our concern. We control the health and safety of our animals from birth to butcher. Our butcher is American Welfare Approved. All our livestock have access to pasture as well as shelter. In the summer they have fans or sprinklers so they can cool off. All are treated with respect and handled in ways that create less stress.
Any feed grains given to our animals are organic. We do not use chemical fertilizers or chemicals in our garden. We do not use any GMO's.
