About Us / paw paw ridge farm History: Professionally, we are a couple of old English teachers, but a relentless addiction for growing things all started with the planting of a couple apple trees for the deer. Before you knew it, we turned an old, neglected hayfield into our farm. At the time, we only had an old 20 year old front tine tiller. We first planted the perennials-- asparagus, berries of all kinds, and a small 60 tree orchard. Things really changed when we purchased a tractor and began the vegetables. Establishing a farm with no water, electricity, or buildings on the property was a challenge. Now, we have running water, a pond, electricity, and a really nice building complete with a 900 sq ft commercial kitchen where we turn all our fruits into all assortments of jellies and jams. We built a nice little park overlooking the pond and have begun planting wildflowers, ornamental trees, and thousands of bulbs and bushes. We get a lot of visitors and enjoy giving tours. We also feed a lot of birds and put up nest boxes everywhere. It has been fun but challenging. Weather conditions have been the biggest challenge with floods and then droughts, but we're still going and improving. We even survived the 17 year locusts and a horde of marauding woodpeckers. We specialize in everything unusual, often planting over 50 varieties of winter squash and some really unique pumpkins of all shapes, sizes, and colors. We have red and black currants, elderberries, Concord grapes, and aronia. Gooseberries are one of our best sellers. Demand for our pawpaws has encouraged us to plant several domestic varieties in order to meet that increasing demand that our wild trees could not meet.. We also are one of the few places to get Asian pears and have several varieties. We also specialize in everything gourds, from fresh to dried to painted. We even do dried okra ornaments.
